DANIEL CROSIER
Where do you live (City, State, or Country)?
Aurora, CO How did you discover The Palm Springs International Screenplay Awards and how did you decide to enter this contest among all the others? I came across the festival through Film Freeway. There doesn’t seem to be too many platforms that celebrate pitch projects, but this one does! Your script or media entry stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your project? I wanted a fun and weird project to work on with my friends. They are super talented and hilarious. Camp Crash was originally a live action project, but because of COVID we pivoted to animation, which leaves us more opportunity to try different things. What is more fun about dystopian summer camp for thirty-year-old kids! Mad Max marries Meatballs is a match in diesel canoeing heaven! How long did it take you to write your script or produce your pitch deck/sizzle reel/trailer...and what was your development process? We were able to adapt the live action script easily into animation. The hard part was executing the animation aspects. I was able to assemble animator Ted Intorcio, character designer and storyboard artist Stephen Santa Cruz, and background artist Joe Oliver, with Stephen Stormer producing. It was all handled within a year under a minuscule budget. What is your ultimate ambition as a writer or filmmaker? I want to be able to connect with folks telling fun stories and make the process fun. I want that to be a living conversation. Sure, it is work, it will always be that. No one needs to be on a project they hate when creating art. When working on my projects I want everyone to want to be there and know they can add their input and see what they contribute. I can wait to do more comedies and horror that an audience can embrace like a bloody hug! Which film directors or screenwriters inspire you? Why? These days: James Gunn! He is a world builder that can always find a heart to whatever story he is telling. This sticks with his audience. I am also very fond of Lloyd Kaufman (Toxic Avenger), Cory McAbee (American Astronaut), Ryan Coogler (Sinners), Takashi Miike (Gozu), David Lynch (Blue Velvet), Mel Brooks (Young Frankenstein)… I can keep going. All for the same thing on how they engage and challenge their audience. But also being accessible. What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show? That is easy. Seven Samurai is my home. Breaking Bad is my dinner. How do you approach competition entries, and what have you learned from participating in these contests? I don’t feel that I have been through this process as my as I should. I just lost a friend, a fellow filmmaker, Milko Davis, who was unable to finish his final film. That has prompted me to delve more into these competitions and endeavor to whatever roads unveil themselves. What advice do you have for others hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? Try. Enter. If you don’t, you will never gain anything. What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? I mentioned Milko Davis. His last film is Big Ass Monsters. Our BAM film family are endeavoring to finish that. We have a killer cupcake family film based on the comic book When Baked Things Attack next – all the puppets and animatronics are built and we were able to shoot some material. Just need more investors. We’re also developing The Enigma (X-Files) horror film based on the ShowDevils comic book I did ten years ago with many artists. Also, lets give Camp Crash some life Where can the world find you?
