JULIE DANIELS
![]() Where do you live (City, State, or Country)?
Los Angeles, CA Your script or media entry stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your project? My creative passion is to write scripts about women in history whose voices were silenced during their lifetime. I deeply identify with Victoria Woodhull’s struggle for freedom and agency over her own life and that of all women. In giving her voice… it enabled me to declare my own. How long did it take you to write your script or produce your pitch deck/sizzle reel/trailer...and what was your development process? THE REDEMPTION OF MRS. SATAN, started out as a stage play. At the beginning of this process, I came into contact with dramaturges and directors, who had no idea who Woodhull was and that she formed her own political party and subsequently ran for president, in 1872. These wonderful mentors were so inspired by Woodhull’s journey, that they encouraged me to adapt the play for the screen. That process took 4 years. What is your ultimate ambition as a writer or filmmaker? My ultimate ambition… to create meaningful work that enriches and elevates audiences. To connect with like-minded creatives in producing work that is poignant, joy filled and inclusive. I am hopeful this will elicit the tender change that is needed to soften our world into a more generous, humane and human family. Which film directors or screenwriters inspire you? Why? I love Greta Gerwig’s work. She employs socio/political commentary, great humor and compassionate truth in both her period and contemporary films. BARBIE is one of my favorite films to date. James Mangold is also at the top of my list of favorite writer/directors. I just saw A COMPLETE UNKNOWN. From the writing, to acting and beautiful directing, it was a knock out. What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show? NETWORK! What advice do you have for others hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? It’s so important to create a community of people who hold each other up with care and kindness. Most importantly, learning and honing one’s craft, brings enormous fulfillment and instills a humble kind of confidence. Never, ever give up! What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? My script HEALER’S WALK, about former slave, Los Angeles heroine, Biddy Mason (circa 1856), has just been optioned by UCE productions.
