LIZ MAYER
Where do you live (City, State, or Country)?
Phoenix, Arizona Your script or media entry stood out among hundreds of others. What was the inspiration for your project? A few years back, my husband and I moved into an Active 55+ Retirement Community. My husband was quick to adjust and began participating in many of the activities they offered. When pickleball got popular, I officially became a Pickleball Widow. I knew I needed to find a hobby or activity that I enjoyed. Turns out, I’m a writer at heart. The result was “IN A PICKLE” a 30 minute ensemble cast tv sitcom. The show reflects my experiences here in the community. How long did it take you to write your script or produce your pitch deck/sizzle reel/trailer...and what was your development process? Once I have an idea for a project I start with a rough outline and then begin to build out the characters and settings making sure I keep good notes on all the backstories. I always have a writing pad available to write down thoughts, dialog, scene settings and other notes that relate to the show. After that I start typing… What is your ultimate ambition as a writer or filmmaker? To shed a fresh light on how today’s retirees are redefining their retirement to meet their needs. I believe “IN A PICKLE” the timing is right for “IN A PICKLE” a show written by and for Boomers. Pets, Pickleball and Past Romance await. Which film directors or screenwriters inspire you? Why? Right now, I’d have to say Quinta Brunson who wrote Abbott Elementary. I admire the fact that she took her personal experience and turned it into an award winning tv series. I’m also a huge fan of Eugene and Daniel Levy, the writers behind Schitt’s Creek. What’s your all-time favorite movie or television show? That’s easy. Jaws. I love everything about that movie from the casting and dialog (you’re gonna need a bigger boat) to the amazing John Williams soundtrack and, of course, Bruce, the mechanical shark. Spielberg changed the way a generation of people view swimming in the ocean. What advice do you have for others hoping to win a contest or place as a finalist as you have? Keep at it. Your two best friends are editing and feedback. I always read and re-read any feedback I receive. Some I incorporate, some I don’t. Realizing that feedback is your friend will help you receive it as such. At some point, however, you must sit back and stop typing. Never forget, you’re the only person who carries the entire story in your head. Remain true to your vision and success will find you. What else are you working on that the world needs to know about? I continue to work on additional episodes for IN A PICKLE and I’ve just started on a project called “Pitch Bitch” about a cruel and unforgiving pitch coach who gets a taste of her own medicine when she stumbles upon a hidden manuscript.
