Synopsis

Makoto

Makoto is a young girl with a father, Yoshihiro, for a champion of a gladiatorial virtual reality competition known as Children of the Earth. One day, she and her best friends, conjoined twins Yukiko and Natsumi, watch him face challenger Joshua for the championship and ultimately defeat him via decision. That night, however, the train that Yoshihiro rides back home crashes, leaving him paralyzed. Makoto begins pushing her friends and family away from her, all the while training with Yoshihiro to become a champion in her own right.

Gil Dong

Ten years later, as a teenager, she leaves home for that year’s Children of the Earth event. There, she meets her coach, Prashasti, along with her teammates: Gil Dong, a spirited competitor with a prosthetic leg and her eventual mutual love interest; Tulio, an eccentric inventor working on a teleporter; and her old friends, Yukiko and Natsumi. Guided by Prashasti, the five teens train together, but during one training session, Makoto reveals a cursed katana that she got from Sergei. Against Prashasti’s warnings, Makoto keeps it. The competition proceeds over the next four months, where they all eventually qualify for the tournament phase of Children of the Earth.

Joshua
Gil Dong notices that the cursed katana is hurting Makoto, but she dismisses his concern. Yukiko and Natsumi call this out after they lose to Joshua, leaving Makoto to further close herself off. The cursed katana hurts her even more as she uses it to defeat Tulio in the next round, and she refuses to listen to Gil Dong, who also loses to Joshua. Soon after, Gil Dong finds Makoto dying back at the hotel and urges Tulio to send her to the hospital using his teleporter. Makoto recovers in the hospital and apologizes to Gil Dong, Yukiko, Natsumi, and the visiting Yoshihiro for pushing them away. Later, she gets rid of the cursed katana and embraces help from her teammates in order to defeat Joshua in the finals. Makoto and Gil Dong affirm their romance before parting ways at the train station, and she, Yoshihiro, Yukiko, and Natsumi take Tulio’s teleporter home.
